Ten days' worth of rice in my bag; a bundle of twigs in my fireplace. Why chatter about delusion and enlightenment? Listening to the night rain on my roof, I sit comfortably, with both legs stretched out."— Ryokan Taigu. The "Land of the Rising Sun" is a country where the past meets the future. Japanese culture stretches back millennia, yet has also been quick to adopt and created the latest modern fashions and trends. Japan is often difficult to understand for those educated in the west. It can seem full of contradictions. Many Japanese corporations dominate their industries, yet if you read the financial news it seems like Japan is practically bankrupt. Cities are as modern and high tech as anywhere else, but tumbledown wooden shacks can still be spotted next to glass fronted designer condominiums. On an average subway ride, you might see childishly cute character toys and incredibly violent pornography - sometimes enjoyed by the same passenger, at the same time! Japan has beautiful temples and gardens which are often surrounded by garish signs and ugly buildings. The most acclaimed restaurant in the country, which costs hundreds of dollars for dinner, is a small shop located in a subway station seating less than a dozen people. In the middle of modern skyscrapers you’ll discover sliding wooden doors which lead to traditional chambers with tatami mats, shoji screens, and calligraphy, suitable for traditional tea ceremonies. These juxtapositions can seem perplexing or jarring to those used to the more uniform nature of European and North American cities, but if you let go, and accept the layered aesthetics, you’ll find interesting and surprising places throughout the country. Japan has often been seen in the West as a land combining tradition and modernity, and many traditional structures and practices are preserved, but modern structures and practices definitely dominate your experience in Japan. Japan was the first Asian country to independently modernize, and the country continues to embrace new technologies and aesthetics, but unlike in many countries, Japan does not feel a particular need to attack or remove older technologies, structures, or practices. New things are mostly just layered beside old things. That’s not to say that Japan embraces the large scale preservation of historical structures or that people generally practice traditional ceremonies, but people generally believe that if a small number of people want to continue on a tradition or preserve a building that they own, they should be allowed to do that. In this way, development mostly happens in a piecemeal fashion, one building at a time, rather than in large redevelopment projects. Many urban blocks evolve to line up dozens of narrow buildings spanning fifty or more years of design history. Clothing styles evolve along a dozen paths at the same time rather than singular mass fashion trends. An individual that embraces a particular subculture and its fashions may alternately conform to vary different norms when working or at home, but there is little sense of conflict between these roles. History[edit]Japan's location on islands at the outermost edge of Asia has had a profound influence on its history. Just close enough to mainland Asia, yet far enough to keep itself separate, much of Japanese history has seen alternating periods of closure and openness. Until recently, Japan has been able to turn on or off its connection to the rest of the world, accepting foreign cultural influences in fits and starts. It is comparable with the relationship between Britain and the rest of Europe, but with a much wider channel. Recorded Japanese history begins in the 5th century, although archaeological evidence of settlement stretches back 5. Emperor Jimmu is said to have founded the current Imperial line in the 7th century BCE. Archaeological evidence, however, has only managed to trace the Imperial line back to the Kofun Period during the 3rd to 7th centuries CE, which was also when the Japanese first had significant contact with China and Korea. Japan then gradually became a centralized state during the Asuka Period, during which Japan extensively absorbed many aspects of Chinese culture, and saw the introduction of Mahayana Buddhism and Confucianism. The popular board game of Go is also believed to have been introduced to Japan during this period. The first strong Japanese state was centered in Nara, which was built to model the then Chinese capital Chang'an. This period, dubbed the Nara Period was the last time the emperor actually held political power, with power eventually falling into the hands of the court nobles during the Heian Period, when the capital was moved to Kyoto, then known as Heian- Kyo, which remained the Japanese imperial residence until the 1. Chinese influence also reached its peak during the early Heian Period, which saw Buddhism become a popular religion among the masses. This was then followed by the Kamakura Period, when the samurai managed to gain political power. Minamoto no Yoritomo, the most powerful of them, was dubbed shogun by the emperor and ruled from his base in Kamakura. The Muromachi Period then saw the Ashikaga shogunate come to power, ruling from their base in Ashikaga. Japan then descended into the anarchy of the Warring States period in the 1. Tokugawa Ieyasu finally reunified the country in 1. Tokugawa shogunate, a feudal state ruled from Edo, or modern- day Tokyo. A strict caste system was imposed, with the Shogun and his samurai warriors at the top of the heap and no social mobility permitted. During this period, dubbed the Edo Period, Tokugawa rule kept the country stable but stagnant with a policy of almost total isolation (with the exception of Dutch and Chinese merchants in certain designated cities) while the world around them rushed ahead. US Commodore Matthew Perry's Black Ships arrived in Yokohama in 1. West, resulting in the signing of unequal treaties and the collapse of the shogunate in the Meiji Restoration of 1. Kyoto to Edo, now re- named Tokyo. After observing Western colonization in Southeast Asia and the division and weakening of China, which the Japanese had for so long considered to be the world's greatest superpower, Japan vowed not to be overtaken by the West, launching itself headlong into a drive to industrialize and modernize at frantic speed. Adopting Western technology and culture wholesale, Japan's cities soon sprouted railways, brick buildings and factories, and even the disastrous Great Kanto Earthquake of 1. Tokyo and killed over 1. From day one, resource- poor Japan had looked elsewhere for the supplies it needed, and this soon turned into a drive to expand and colonize its neighbors. The Sino- Japanese War of 1. Japan take control of Taiwan, Korea and parts of Manchuria, and its victory against Russia in the 1. Russo- Japanese war cemented its position of strength. With an increasingly totalitarian government controlled by the military, Japan launched a full- scale invasion of China via Manchuria in 1. Asia and the Pacific. In 1. 94. 1, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, destroying a large portion of the US Pacific fleet but drawing America into the war, whose tide soon started to turn against Japan. By the time it was forced to surrender in 1. Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 1. Japanese civilians and military personnel had died, well over 1. Chinese and other Asians had been killed, many in atrocities committed by the Japanese military machine, and Japan was occupied for the first time in its history. The Emperor kept his throne but lost his god- like position in the imposed constitution. Converted to pacifism and "democracy", with the US taking care of defense, Japan now directed its prodigious energies into peaceful technology and re- emerged from poverty to conquer the world's marketplaces with an endless stream of cars and consumer electronics to attain the second- largest gross national product in the world. But frenzied growth could not last forever, and after the Nikkei stock index hit the giddy heights of 3. Japan's lost decade of the 1. Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1. Kobe and killed over 6,0. The economy has yet to fully recover from its doldrums, with deflation driving down prices, an increasingly unsupportable burden of government debt (nearing 2. GDP) and an increasing polarization of Japanese society into "haves" with permanent jobs and "have- not" freeters drifting between temporary jobs. This has resulted in Japan losing its position as the world's second largest economy to its larger neighbour, China. The Japanese have one of the highest standards of living in the world. As an island nation shut off from the rest of the world for a long time (with mild exceptions from China and Korea), Japan is very homogeneous. Almost 9. 9% of the population is of Japanese ethnicity. The largest minority are Koreans, around 1 million strong, many in their 3rd or 4th generation. There are also sizable populations of Chinese, Filipinos and Brazilians, although many are of Japanese descent. Though largely assimilated, the resident Chinese population maintains a presence in Japan's three Chinatowns in Kobe, Nagasaki and Yokohama. Indigenous ethnic minorities include the Ainu on Hokkaido, gradually driven north during the centuries and now numbering around 5. BETTE K KOLODNEY, PH. D. Part II: The Cases of Innocence. A. Fate Worse Than Death - TV Tropes. Voldemort: There is nothing worse than death, Dumbledore. Dumbledore: You are quite wrong. Indeed, your failure to understand that there are things much worse than death has always been your greatest weakness. Think death is the cruelest fate? Directed by Robert Zemeckis. With Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, Goldie Hawn, Isabella Rossellini. When a woman learns of an immortality treatment, she sees it as a way to outdo her long-time rival. Think again. There are several things much worse: torture, taxes, and tofu, to name but a few. And more often than not, some unfortunate soul will experience it. Originally, this phrase meant rape, but now there'seven worse than that. This phrase is usually used in a Just Between You and Me moment by the Evil Overlord as they boast about the agony- inducing Death Trap that awaits the hero for delaying their plans. It's also fairly commonly used as a warning to the hero against seeking forbidden power or knowledge, and consequently to foreshadow the particular Karmic Death the villain will suffer because of meddling with the universe's Cosmic Keystone. If the victim is immortal, this fate may even replace death, which might suck royally. Mercy Killings are common when heroes find anyone in this state. If the character can beg for help, I Cannot Self- Terminate occurs; if they can act on their own, they are often Driven to Suicide. Indeed, since all involve choosing death over a given fate, the characters often conclude that that fate is worse than death. Contrast Cruel and Unusual Death, for when the victim instead gets a gruesome death that sucks beyond telling. See also: Cruel Mercy, Empty Shell, To the Pain, The Punishment, Room 1. And I Must Scream, and occasionally Cool and Unusual Punishment. Tailor Made Prisons may be this by nature or design in order to torture its prisoner. Not to be confused with A Fête Worse Than Death, though the two can occasionally overlap. Arts The drawing Esto es peor ("This is worse") by Francisco de Goya from his The Disasters Of War shows the body of a mutilated body of a Spanish fighter spiked on a tree, surrounded by the corpses of French soldiers. Fan Works Mister Greeter, a Hell/Human AU of Axis Powers Hetalia, begins when America meets Arthur Kirkland, the Greeter of Hell, and insists he is there by mistake. While the first chapter and England as a person are both deceptively nice, the next chapters describe Hell, literally. Later in the series, America risks being moved to a higher level.
Basically, a worse sentence. And his torture is considered mild. Advice And Trust: After finding out Rei was emotionless because she was being ordered to taking drugs in order to render her obedient, compliant and emotionless, Asuka declares that she would rather die than be turned into a puppet. Asuka: "Don't.. don't let that happen to me, Shinji. Don't let them do that to me. Or you. I'd rather die."Doing It Right This Time: Shinji thinks of killing his father before coming up with something better: give him exactly what he wants and reunite him with Yui and then seeing his mother giving his father a piece of her mind and then divorcing him. Getting separated from Yui is something worse than death to Gendo. Batman Beyond Revisited: If Chainsaw doesnt kill you for failing him or insulting him, then you become his slave instead. Signified most of all by shock collars. People in Glass Houses, a Warehouse 1. The Royal Audience: A Mole Cricket Story: In the flashbacks a process known as extraction occurs when the Changeling Queen orders that all the love (energy and life force) is drained from a changeling, rendering them inert and petrified but completely aware. What's worse is that Commander Blatteria uses extracted changelings as furniture. Pattycakes: Some readers have commented that they'd rather be cupcaked - i. Dash. The Legend of Link: Lucky Number 1. And I Must Scream around, but there are a few instances where it settles for this trope instead. Link is captured by the exiled pirate queen of Great Bay, chained figure- eight style in a well, and tortured for four years while his Healing Factor keeps him alive. After Link defeats his father, he opts to strip him of his power and immortality and describes it as "worse than killing him." Immediately subverted. The Originals robbed Hadrian of his ability to kill, and otherwise left him unharmed. Considering he's a War God. Blood Knight, this could be seen as the ultimate insult. Worse yet, since damage dealt by the Originals is impossible to heal, even by the strongest gods, he's stuck this way forever. Varia and Takara are captured and held for eight months as test subjects for human experimentation. They are starved, tormented, emaciated.. Immortality, unable to die. Makarov has one of these planned for Shining (as revenge for Shining's dishonorable insult of not knowing who he was), which he goes into great detail about. To sum up: he intends to remove Shining's horn and install a mind- control device in his brain that will take away his ability to talk or control his body and send him to a slave mine, where his genitals and all other excess body mass will be removed (and fed to the Diamond Dogs running the mine), before being condemned to labor in the mine for the rest of his life, all with him still conscious and unable to do anything. It's hard for non- benders to imagine. Think of it like this — what if I cut off your arms but left you otherwise alive and well? You would never be able to fight again, you would never be able to — actually, imagine I cut off your arms and your legs. You would never fight, never walk, never be independent or free or strong ever again. You would go from being who you are today to a - a burden, something others have to take care of, unable to take care of yourself or do anything for yourself ever again. This article is about euthanasia of humans. For mercy killings performed on other animals, see Animal euthanasia. Euthanasia (from Greek: εá½Î¸Î±Î½Î±ÏƒÎ¯Î±; "good death": εὖ, eu; "well" or "good" – θάνατος, thanatos; "death") is the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering.[1]There are different euthanasia laws in each country. The British House of Lords. Select Committee on Medical Ethics defines euthanasia as "a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, to relieve intractable suffering".[2] In the Netherlands and Flanders, euthanasia is understood as "termination of life by a doctor at the request of a patient".[3]Euthanasia is categorized in different ways, which include voluntary, non- voluntary, or involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is legal in some countries. Non- voluntary euthanasia (patient's consent unavailable) is illegal in all countries. Involuntary euthanasia (without asking consent or against the patient's will) is also illegal in all countries and is usually considered murder.[4] As of 2. In some countries there is a divisive public controversy over the moral, ethical, and legal issues of euthanasia. Those who are against euthanasia may argue for the sanctity of life, while proponents of euthanasia rights emphasize alleviating suffering, and preserving bodily integrity, self- determination, and personal autonomy.[6] Jurisdictions where euthanasia is legal include the Netherlands, Canada,[7]Colombia, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Definition. Like other terms borrowed from history, "euthanasia" has had different meanings depending on usage. The first apparent usage of the term "euthanasia" belongs to the historian. Suetonius, who described how the Emperor Augustus, "dying quickly and without suffering in the arms of his wife, Livia, experienced the 'euthanasia' he had wished for."[8] The word "euthanasia" was first used in a medical context by Francis Bacon in the 1. Bacon referred to an "outward euthanasia"—the term "outward" he used to distinguish from a spiritual concept—the euthanasia "which regards the preparation of the soul."[9]In current usage, euthanasia has been defined as the "painless inducement of a quick death".[1. However, it is argued that this approach fails to properly define euthanasia, as it leaves open a number of possible actions which would meet the requirements of the definition, but would not be seen as euthanasia. In particular, these include situations where a person kills another, painlessly, but for no reason beyond that of personal gain; or accidental deaths that are quick and painless, but not intentional.[1. Another approach incorporates the notion of suffering into the definition.[1. The definition offered by the Oxford English Dictionary incorporates suffering as a necessary condition, with "the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma",[1. This approach is included in Marvin Khol and Paul Kurtz's definition of it as "a mode or act of inducing or permitting death painlessly as a relief from suffering".[1. Counterexamples can be given: such definitions may encompass killing a person suffering from an incurable disease for personal gain (such as to claim an inheritance), and commentators such as Tom Beauchamp and Arnold Davidson have argued that doing so would constitute "murder simpliciter" rather than euthanasia.[1. The third element incorporated into many definitions is that of intentionality – the death must be intended, rather than being accidental, and the intent of the action must be a "merciful death".[1. Michael Wreen argued that "the principal thing that distinguishes euthanasia from intentional killing simpliciter is the agent's motive: it must be a good motive insofar as the good of the person killed is concerned."[1. Similarly, Heather Draper speaks to the importance of motive, arguing that "the motive forms a crucial part of arguments for euthanasia, because it must be in the best interests of the person on the receiving end."[1. Definitions such as that offered by the House of Lords. Select Committee on Medical Ethics take this path, where euthanasia is defined as "a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, to relieve intractable suffering."[2] Beauchamp and Davidson also highlight Baruch Brody's "an act of euthanasia is one in which one person .. A) kills another person (B) for the benefit of the second person, who actually does benefit from being killed".[1. Draper argued that any definition of euthanasia must incorporate four elements: an agent and a subject; an intention; a causal proximity, such that the actions of the agent lead to the outcome; and an outcome. Based on this, she offered a definition incorporating those elements, stating that euthanasia "must be defined as death that results from the intention of one person to kill another person, using the most gentle and painless means possible, that is motivated solely by the best interests of the person who dies."[1. Prior to Draper, Beauchamp and Davidson had also offered a definition that includes these elements. Their definition specifically discounts fetuses in order to distinguish between abortions and euthanasia: [1. In summary, we have argued .. A, is an instance of euthanasia if and only if (1) A's death is intended by at least one other human being, B, where B is either the cause of death or a causally relevant feature of the event resulting in death (whether by action or by omission); (2) there is either sufficient current evidence for B to believe that A is acutely suffering or irreversibly comatose, or there is sufficient current evidence related to A's present condition such that one or more known causal laws supports B's belief that A will be in a condition of acute suffering or irreversible comatoseness; (3) (a) B's primary reason for intending A's death is cessation of A's (actual or predicted future) suffering or irreversible comatoseness, where B does not intend A's death for a different primary reason, though there may be other relevant reasons, and (b) there is sufficient current evidence for either A or B that causal means to A's death will not produce any more suffering than would be produced for A if B were not to intervene; (4) the causal means to the event of A's death are chosen by A or B to be as painless as possible, unless either A or B has an overriding reason for a more painful causal means, where the reason for choosing the latter causal means does not conflict with the evidence in 3b; (5) A is a nonfetal organism."[1. Wreen, in part responding to Beauchamp and Davidson, offered a six- part definition: "Person A committed an act of euthanasia if and only if (1) A killed B or let her die; (2) A intended to kill B; (3) the intention specified in (2) was at least partial cause of the action specified in (1); (4) the causal journey from the intention specified in (2) to the action specified in (1) is more or less in accordance with A's plan of action; (5) A's killing of B is a voluntary action; (6) the motive for the action specified in (1), the motive standing behind the intention specified in (2), is the good of the person killed."[2. Wreen also considered a seventh requirement: "(7) The good specified in (6) is, or at least includes, the avoidance of evil", although as Wreen noted in the paper, he was not convinced that the restriction was required.[2. In discussing his definition, Wreen noted the difficulty of justifying euthanasia when faced with the notion of the subject's "right to life". In response, Wreen argued that euthanasia has to be voluntary, and that "involuntary euthanasia is, as such, a great wrong".[2. Other commentators incorporate consent more directly into their definitions. For example, in a discussion of euthanasia presented in 2. European Association of Palliative Care (EPAC) Ethics Task Force, the authors offered: "Medicalized killing of a person without the person's consent, whether nonvoluntary (where the person in unable to consent) or involuntary (against the person's will) is not euthanasia: it is murder. Hence, euthanasia can be voluntary only."[2. Although the EPAC Ethics Task Force argued that both non- voluntary and involuntary euthanasia could not be included in the definition of euthanasia, there is discussion in the literature about excluding one but not the other.[2. Classification of euthanasia. Euthanasia may be classified according to whether a person gives informed consent into three types: voluntary, non- voluntary and involuntary.[2. There is a debate within the medical and bioethics literature about whether or not the non- voluntary (and by extension, involuntary) killing of patients can be regarded as euthanasia, irrespective of intent or the patient's circumstances. In the definitions offered by Beauchamp and Davidson and, later, by Wreen, consent on the part of the patient was not considered as one of their criteria, although it may have been required to justify euthanasia.[1. However, others see consent as essential. Voluntary euthanasia. Euthanasia conducted with the consent of the patient is termed voluntary euthanasia. Active voluntary euthanasia is legal in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Passive voluntary euthanasia is legal throughout the U. S. per Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health. When the patient brings about his or her own death with the assistance of a physician, the term assisted suicide is often used instead. Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland and the U. S. states of California, Oregon, Washington, Montana and Vermont. Non- voluntary euthanasia. Euthanasia conducted when the consent of the patient is unavailable is termed non- voluntary euthanasia.
